Don't Fall for a "Money-Back Guarantee"
by Wendy Betterini
Have you ever been tempted to pay for a work-at-home opportunity because
they offered a money-back guarantee? It's amazing how easily we rationalize our doubts away when we want something
very badly.
An internet search for work-at-home opportunities will bring up plenty of choices - not all of them legitimate.
However, too many of us are falsely lulled into a sense of security when we see the word "guarantee". I've seen it
time and time again, forum participants proclaiming, "I'm going to give it a try; they offer a money-back
guarantee, so I can't lose!"
The problem with this is obvious: what assurance do you have that a
company or website will HONOR a money-back guarantee?
If a well-known and well-established company offers you a guarantee, you can feel pretty confident that it will be
honored. They have a reputation to uphold, they want to keep you as a customer, and they want to stay in
business.
But "Joe Schmoe's Envelope-Stuffing Opportunities"? What incentive does such a "company" have to honor your
guarantee? If word gets out about Joe's shady business dealings, he can simply abandon his website and reappear the
next day under the name of Jack Schmack's Data-Entry Opportunities. He doesn't care about you. His only motivation
is to suck as much money from your wallet as possible.
I know his website is filled with soothing and encouraging words. He has inspiring testimonials from people just
like you who were desperate to find a way to earn money from home. When they found Joe's (or Jack's) website, they
found the magic ticket. And you are now one of the lucky ones. For the amazingly low cost of $20.00, you too can be
earning thousands a week from the comfort of your home. Even better, Joe (or Jack) personally GUARANTEES your
success! If you're not fully satisfied, simply let him know and he will refund your $20.00, no questions asked.
What a deal!
Let's take a guess about what would happen if you did indeed request a refund. I don't think I have to paint you a
picture.
The bottom line is: there are no magic secrets to working at home. In order to work at home, you have 3 simple
choices:
1) Get a telecommuting job. There are many employers out there that are taking advantage of
today's technology and hiring telecommuters to work from home! Yes, it can be challenging to secure one of these
positions because the competition is fierce. But it's not impossible. If you truly want a telecommuting job, make
it your mission to get one! Consider your skills and experience, and go about finding a legitimate job with a
legitimate employer. Thousands of others have done it, and you can too. Visit our Telecommuting center here.
2) Find a legitimate home-business opportunity. There are dozens and dozens of real companies that
offer home business opportunities to people just like you. You can choose from direct sales opportunities like
Tupperware, Discovery Toys, Usborne Books, Avon, Mary Kay, and more. There are scrapbooking companies, candle
companies, jewelry companies, food and cooking companies, coffee companies, pet product companies, baby gear
companies...endless choices!
There are also plenty of Network Marketing companies to choose from. Network Marketing is slightly different than
direct sales in that usually you're a "distributor" rather than a salesperson. Most often you don't sell the
products yourself, but rather "refer" others to the company and earn a commission on their auto-shipments each
month. You can also earn money by referring others to the business opportunity.
The most important points with either of these options: choose a company whose products you feel passionate about,
and research the company to be sure they're legitimate. (Also note that business opportunities such as these DO
usually require a start-up fee of some kind, which will usually get you a start up kit with some products, catalogs
and paperwork.) Some of them even offer a money-back guarantee in the form of a trial period, so you can decide
whether you really want to continue with the opportunity or not.
3) Start your own company. It sounds intimidating, but once you get some ideas flowing it becomes
very simple! Think about the products or services you could offer others in your own business. I've seen people
start companies that sell handmade jewelry, candles, or gourmet food. You could start a virtual assistant business
and offer your administrative skills to local businesses, or even other home business owners online.
You could create a very lucrative career as a dog-walker, groomer, or pet-sitter. One local pet groomer in my area
used to be employed by a veterinary clinic, but she eventually struck out on her own as a "mobile groomer." She
purchased a cute white van and had colorful paw prints painted all over it, and she now travels around the city to
people's houses, grooming their cats and dogs. She makes an amazing amount of money at it too! We also have a local
company here that specializes in "pet waste removal" - in other words, they clean up dog poop from people's back
yards, and they earn a tidy sum doing it!
PEOPLE PAY FOR CONVENIENCE.
Find a way to make people's lives easier or better, and you'll have customers for life. Get creative! ANY skill,
knowledge, or experience you have can be turned into a home business.
When it comes right down to it, your ONLY guarantee in life is the one you give to yourself. If you are determined
to earn an income from home, be your own backer. Believe in your dreams, and find a way to make them happen. Forget
the pipe dreams that scammers try to feed you. Build your own dream from the ground up, and you'll guarantee your
own success in anything you do.
